Common Types of Chronic Neck Pain

The following information highlights common types of chronic neck pain and how our doctors approach treatment.

Cervical Spondylosis

Also referred to as arthritis that exists in the neck, Cervical Spondylosis occurs when the disks and facet joints that run through this area degenerate over time or are exposed to sudden trauma and are damaged. In this degenerated and/or damaged state, your discs begin to dry out and crack due to a loss of a sugar-protein known as proteoglycans, tearing its outer layers- annulus fibrosus. This creates sharp pain for patients that can become too overwhelming to perform basic activities like walking or standing.

Although there is no direct correlation between the amount of degeneration seen on an x-ray of the neck and the amount of pain someone will suffer, we can directly correlate degenerated areas to the clinical recreation of pain in the same region.

Chiropractic care returns the reduced ranges of motion to the spinal joints thereby decreasing pain and slowing the degenerative process. Chiropractic care coupled with other modalities such as cervical decompression (traction), massage therapy and ultrasound can aid in management and allow a patient to return to normal activities without pain.

Disc Degeneration

Symptoms associated with this condition include recurring headaches, severe neck pain, pain that radiates through each arm, and limited mobility. Degeneration is often the result of injuries that were not treated correctly or did not heal properly, as well as stress that develops over time.

Cervical Herniated Disc

Herniated disks are the result of force that pushes them out of their natural positions. Patients who experience a herniated disc often suffer from nerve symptoms that include tingling, weakness, intense pain, and muscle atrophy. Depending upon the type of herniated disk, the majority are easily treated with Chiropractic care and spinal decompression. Our Chiropractic Physicians have extensive post doctorate education and training related to spinal injuries and diagnosis of disk related problems. If they feel that a condition is not within their scope of treatment, they will communicate that with the patient and provide any referrals needed.

Cervical Foraminal Stenosis

When the nerve roots that travel from your brain to your spinal cord are compressed or pinched, cervical foraminal stenosis occurs. Patients suffering from this condition typically feel significant shoulder pain, arm pain, or numbness in their hands. Our Chiropractic Physicians have extensive post doctorate education and training related to spinal stenosis/IVF stenosis, diagnosis and treatment. In many cases, Chiropractic care is often used to treat cervical foraminal stenosis using gentle mobilization/adjustments and spinal decompression. Care is dependent upon the severity of signs and symptoms a patient presents during examination, in many cases imaging such as X-ray, MRI or CT may be needed to understand the extent of compression to the nerve structures. Our Chiropractic Physicians have worked with many stenosis patients and understand when to refer a patient for specialized treatment.
